House Spider Prevention & Identification

House spiders aren't as problematic as other common household pests, but that doesn't mean we should give them a free pass. While beneficial outside in our gardens, these leggy pests shouldn't feel welcome to share our West Palm Beach homes.

What are house spiders?

As its name suggests, the house spider is the most common spider to find living in our homes. When these spiders enter our houses, they quickly make themselves home and do not want to move back outside. They enjoy the temperature-controlled environment our homes provide them.

We identify house spiders by their brown color and darker chevron-like markings on their legs. Some house spiders will have white markings on their abdomen. Like all arachnids, house spiders have eight legs.

Are house spiders dangerous?

House spiders and their webs are unsightly and unwanted in our Florida homes, but they are not dangerous to people. Like all spiders, house spiders have fangs to inject venom into their prey. While house spiders can bite people, their bites are rare. House spiders typically only bite to protect themselves from being squished. More good news is that if a bite occurs, their venom isn't potent enough to cause us harm.

Why do I have a house spider problem?

House spiders can become a problem in any of our homes. They can enter our homes on their own through openings in your home's exterior or hitchhike inside. Storage boxes, potted plants, building materials, and almost anything else that has been outside and you bring inside your home can cause a house spider infestation.

Once inside, house spiders will make quick work of finding secluded places to build their webs.

Where will I find house spiders?

House spiders like to hang out in quiet areas; they are shy and want to stay out of the line of fire. Before you see the spiders themselves, you are most likely to spot their webs. House spiders will build a web, and if they do not catch any prey in it, they will abandon it and build a new web in a new location.

Some of the house spiders' preferred hangouts include the corners of ceilings, above cabinets, within areas of clutter, light fixtures, and around windows and doors. They like to live in the same home area where their insect prey does- kitchens, basements, closets, crawl spaces, and utility rooms.
